Leadership and motivation skills are lacking in UK

Date: 01/10/2010

Leadership and management skills are lacking in the UK - a situation which is causing the productivity gap to open up.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), efforts made to reduce the productivity gap are being undermined by low levels of employee motivation.

The CIPD said that government investment in skills development will be a waste if staff are not given the opportunity to apply their new skills or encouraged to go the extra mile for their employers.

However, Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, claimed that CIPD was taking an over-simplified view of the leadership and motivation situation.

"I don't think you can talk about management skills and productivity in just one country because you're talking about international companies who train their people in lots of different locations, so the CIPD are wrong there," Mr Huxham said.

Earlier research from the Institute of Leadership and Management showed that employees at firms that were hit particularly hard by the recession have very low expectations of their chief executive officers.
