Leadership and motivation is lacking at many firms

A large number of managers believe their leadership and motivation skills are better than they actually are, according to new research.
The study, conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), shows that many managers feel they excel at staff management, but their misguided self-confidence could actually be hampering business growth.
Some 2,000 business managers were surveyed by the CMI and almost half felt their leadership and motivation skills were excellent.
However, a separate study conducted by the CMI offered contradictory results, with just 14 per cent claiming that they were a born leader.
Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the CMI, said: "We're desperately short of good leaders in this country.
"Management and leadership skill development has been neglected by employers, Government and managers themselves for far too long.
"We need a renewed focus on investment in training and development in this field."
According to Andy Philpott, managing director at Edenred, leadership and motivation can be improved by increasing the amount of targeted, employee-focused internal communication.
