Leadership and motivation 'requires vision'

Date: 23/09/2010

Business leaders intent on boosting employee motivation and engagement need vision and energy, it has been claimed.

According to Harvard Business Review, authority and a natural strategic ability helps to eradicate uncertainty in the workplace and can, in turn, boost perceived leadership and motivation.

However, the publication suggested that while these characteristics are strong character traits that can instil motivation, they are not all that is needed.

In HBR's 10 Must Reads on Leadership, the organisation claimed that humanness, intuition, tough empathy and uniqueness were also required.

"Nobody wants to work with a perfect leader. Build collaboration and solidarity by revealing your weaknesses," HBR suggested.

Adding: "Care deeply about your employees, but accept nothing less than their very best."

The tips on leadership follow comments from HR expert Maria Collins, who told Helium that employee motivation techniques do not need to cost the earth.

She said they just require some thought and careful consideration.ADNFCR-2060-ID-800079367-ADNFCR
