Leaders 'must motivate staff'

Date: 23/01/2009

Leaders must motivate and develop their employees in order to ensure business success, advises one management expert.

Anyone who is in a position of authority must be able to lead by example when it comes to motivating employees, states Nathan Jamail.

"To keep your team motivated on a long-term, consistent basis, a leader must have a plan that involves that energy," he suggests.

Leaders should focus on what they can do each day, week, month and quarter to ensure they are motivating employees, Mr Jamail continues.

Knowledge is a key principal for motivation, the expert points out, meaning things such as team building and corporate events could inform workers and help to keep them motivated.
Mr Jamail believes that powerful leaders can articulate their vision for others to follow.

They should also be able to coach in order to develop and improve skills, as well as boost morale and positive attitudes, he comments.
