Leaders 'must be honest, competent and inspirational'
Date: 15/04/2009
For workers to have high morale, they must have an "honest, competent, inspirational and forward-looking" leadership, it has been stated.
Speaking to the Akron Beacon Journal, Kent State University professor emeritus in management and leadership Robert D Smith said that "high-quality oral communication skills" are at the very centre of motivating employees, with good managerial abilities ultimately improving performance.
Offering other tips to improve morale in the office, Professor Smith recommended that team building events be utilised as they can encourage open discussions, better problem-solving and a better representation of diverse thoughts and beliefs.
Furthermore, he said that good management is also helpful in being able to deal with resistance to change or new ideas, as well as an improvement in explanations behind such new concepts and how they can benefit individuals and the company on a whole.
This week, Paula Lawlor, a management expert from Pittsburgh, told health publication Advance that without team building skills, performance in an organisation would be restricted.
