Staff engagement is suffering at the hands of employers who are failing to communicate their business plans properly, a leading poll has revealed this week.
According to a study commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), only 24 per cent of 2,100 people questioned said their employer had held a team building conference to set down their objectives to the workforce for the coming year.
A further 32 per cent questioned the existence of a business plan, while another 27 per cent said they were properly prepared for the next year in the current financial climate.
Commenting on the lack of communication through such things as team building conferences, David MacLeod, an adviser to BIS and the co-author of the Engaging for Success report, said: "Clear goals are a key ingredient for achieving performance and productivity.
"If leaders don't explain where the business is going and what it's seeking to achieve, how can people be motivated or know what they're meant to contribute?"
The current secretary of state for BIS is Lord Mandelson, with the department being created out of the amalgamation of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
