Companies must prioritise exactly what they want from their internet connection in the workplace, otherwise they could be indirectly affecting morale, it has been said.
Greg Day, writing for ITWales, said: "IT decision makers often have the difficult job of making a choice between what they know are serious security threats and other business priorities such as productivity and employee morale."
He explained that many IT managers simply prioritise the role of security in the workplace without considering how it affects the overall happiness of people in the office, where certain applications - such as instant messaging and social networking - help in motivating employees.
As a result, businesses might want to draw up a set of usage policies in order to bridge the gap between what IT departments would like to block and what may be more functionally realistic.
Earlier this month, Blue Coat Systems stated that through the implementation of the correct technology such as hosted services, companies could enhance performance through flexible working initiatives.
