Institute of Employment Studies: Government cuts causing low employee motivation

Date: 04/02/2011

Government cuts, youth unemployment and large banking bonuses are leaving UK workers with little employee motivation, according to experts.

The Institute for Employment Studies has said that cuts in public sector workplaces have led workers to feel "de-motivated and undervalued" in a place that was traditionally a "safer" place to work.

"Public sector workers who are being made redundant may not find it easy to find jobs in the private sector, as the latter is still being very careful about new recruitment," said Dilys Robinson, principle research fellow at the institute.

She added that staff feel a sense of unfairness when they hear about banking bonuses, and worry about their children facing unemployment after education, which increases anxiety.

Research this week from Monster.co.uk also revealed that 73 per cent of people are unhappy in their jobs, but 20 per cent won't look for another one as they do not think there are any out there.
