Incentives and recognition 'must improve' in UK businesses

Date: 06/01/2010

One in three employees in the UK does not feel valued by their employer following harder work put in during the recession and would find a different job if they could, according to new research.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) polled 950 workers on the topic and asserted that organisations across the UK must try their best with incentives and recognition to make big changes and meet the expectations of employees.

Partner and leader of human resource services at PwC Michael Rendell said that, while supermarkets are creating a legacy by training people to be competent for the future, others have focused on short-term measures and may have left themselves in a predicament in the future.

"As the long-term impact of people management decisions taken during the downturn begins to be felt," he continued, "the winners and losers of the war for talent are starting to reveal themselves - with those who continued to focus on investment and employee engagement emerging as clear leaders."

The British Chambers of Commerce has spelled out a more doomed future for employees in 2010, however, as its most recent Monthly Business Survey concluded that 63 per cent of firms are going to freeze wages or use pay cuts during this year.
