A number of myths surrounding the use of incentives and recognition are regularly believed by those that use them, according to an expert.
Lynn Truong, writing for American Express Open Forum, explained that while incentives programmes are popular, many have argued that instead of being effective, they're quite the opposite: detrimental.
The expert noted that many organisations use it to boost morale but this can be a shortcut which doesn't solve the real issues.
Ms Truong continued: "Morale is usually not low due to a lack of incentives. Typically, morale is low for reasons like bad management. Offering gifts or cash in exchange for extra work doesn't address this."
She said that it was much the same story for motivation and productivity, though argued that improved communication is the best way to achieve success - possibly highlighting the importance of team building corporate events to bridge any divides.
A morale-boosting initiative for the coming months may be to hold a Christmas party, according to a recent study by Outsourced Events, which added that productivity and performance are also improved through such an offering.
