Incentive schemes need to 'avoid pitfalls'

Date: 13/01/2009

People looking for incentives and recognition schemes in order to motivate employees should bear in mind that a wrong choice could potentially derail the best of intentions, it has been stated.

Bob Cooper, a business-building specialist for Elite, a company in the automotive industry, said that non-monetary incentives were also as important as the traditional idea of cash bonuses, reports Search Autoparts.

He stressed the need to boil each idea down to more basic constituent parts, with overly complicated ideas usually undermining the goal of reward and recognition as people need to understand the milestones set out.

Ultimately, Mr Cooper emphasised that bosses need to "resist the urge to create incentives or objectives that are so aggressive that they are unattainable" as they are uninspiring, with more realistic recognition programmes seen as a more conducive way of motivating employees.

Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs states that awards in the workplace are usually best linked to sales performance, good timekeeping or safety and production records.
