The Treasury Committee has announced that it is concerned about the results of a staff survey that ranked Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) against 10 other government departments, putting it dead last.
It was argued that the financial crisis and recession had undoubtedly put pressure on the department in 2008-09 and as such it is difficult to draw full and accurate conclusions on how everything is going.
Despite this, team building corporate events may be in order after the survey found that only 11 per cent of HMRC staff felt that change was managed well, while employee engagement was just 32 per cent - 16 per cent lower than the average across 11 government departments.
Chairman Michael Fallon said: "We are particularly alarmed by the low of staff morale and engagement at HMRC and its effect on performance.
"We are deeply troubled by the apparent absence of any plan to ameliorate the situation, and call on HMRC management to re-double their efforts here."
Recently, it was revealed by the Commons Treasury Committee that a delayed IT system forced HMRC to manually process 35 million cases in 2008-09.
