Good employee motivation is 'key to avoiding legal action'

Date: 23/08/2010

Businesses wanting to avoid legal action from staff members should ensure that employee motivation is a top priority.

According to Phil Flaxton, the chief executive of Work Wise UK, more people than ever before are taking their employers to court over working conditions - such as longer hours and increasing unpaid overtime.

His comments come after research from Contact Law, published last week, showed that in the past month there has been a 15 per cent increase in the number of people seeking work-related legal advice.

Speaking to You at Work, Mr Flaxton said employers should avoid putting "unlawful pressure" on staff, which can impact upon employee motivation.

He told the news provider that the uncertainty in the employment market was already causing employee morale to suffer and urged managers to keep the lines of communication between staff and managers open to help maintain high levels of employee motivation.

The legal implications were also apparent in new research published by Acas, which showed that work tribunals had increased by 13 per cent year-on-year.
