Future leaders 'may be lost by employers' in recession

Date: 12/05/2009

Workplace learning and skills such as team building are of the utmost importance for employers hoping to nurture future stars of the company, according to the leader of a new initiative.

Chief executive at the Campaign for Learning Tricia Hartley told Fresh Business Thinking that the upcoming Learning at Work Day aims to highlight just how important it is to foster workplace knowledge.

She said that success is needed more than ever and, as a result, companies should seriously consider investing in methods of keeping people at an organisation, highlighting the importance of reward and recognition in the current climate.

Ms Hartley continued: "During this unsettling time for workplaces, maintaining the ability and motivation to learn and adapt quickly to change is essential.

"We should be reflecting on our skills needs at an individual and business level and taking action where needed."

It follows comments made by Sheila Sheldon, a reward and recognition expert speaking to PersonnelToday, stated that employees need their efforts appreciated, even if it is only small yet meaningful gifts which are offered.
