Firms need to 'show employees respect'

The issue of communication with staff is one that has been highlighted by a leading authority in the business world, explaining that trust must be put in staff for a greater return in the current climate.

Carolyn Jones, the director of the Institute of Employment Rights, explained that businesses need to orchestrate team building conferences with their employees to discuss plans to deal with the recession, particularly in relation to the likes of incentives and recognition.

As a result, many have to bite the bullet and accept that their employees may understand the people side of the business at a more involved level, it was asserted.

Ms Jones explained: "If [employees] are not treated with respect, the discontent will be a ticking time bomb. We've already seen workers kick back, to an extent, with sit-ins and rallies at some companies."

Last month, Monster conducted a survey finding that 20 per cent of British workers are considering a career change, highlighting how businesses ought to invest in their workers if they are to keep talent on board after the downturn.
