Firms should be thoughtful and creative in their schemes for motivating employees, it is suggested.
Communication should be open and anxieties must be acknowledged, urges the Portland Press Herald.
Motivating employees is not simply a matter of being nice, the news provider points out, adding that poor morale can lead to decreased productivity - bad news during tough economic times.
"It's natural that morale will affect productivity, especially when layoffs leave remaining employees worried," states Ray Inglesi, president of human resources firm Drake Inglesi Milardo.
He calls on employers to tackle workplace stress and remain open and visible.
The Health and Safety Executive recently unveiled a stress website to help firms prevent work-related stress.
It says Great Britain lost 13.5 million days to work-related stress last year and points out that although some pressure can be motivating, too much undermines performances and is costly to businesses.
