Fake corporate event management a problem in China

Date: 08/07/2010

There is a growing trend in China for businesses to recruit fake, Western businesses executives to talk at their corporate events, it has been claimed.

According to Canadian journalist Mitch Moxley, some Chinese companies use white North Americans from fictional US companies to raise the profile of their events.

Speaking to the BBC World Service, the undercover reporter said he was hired by one firm to represent a fake California-based business which was named as a partner of the company in question.

"We were a fictional American company that was supposedly spearheading this project," he said.

Another fake corporate event speaker to head to Beijing was an American called Ben.

He told the BBC World Service: "The first thing was to go to the opening event.

"After the opening event, we were taken to the VIP dinner event."

Corporate events management in the UK is big business, adding more than £18.8 billion to the economy last year.
