Offering incentives and recognition is a good way to improve employee motivation during tough economic times, according to an expert.
With budget cuts and other monetary restraints affecting both public and private sector businesses, providing workers with alternative rewards could be a good way to boost staff morale, says Diana Bruce from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals.
"Employers need to keep communication open at all times and find other ways of motivating staff," Ms Bruce said.
She added examples of these benefits, such as childcare or private health insurance.
Last week a study by commercial recruiter Crone Corkill revealed that bonuses and rewards were two things people look for when choosing a job, as over half admitted these elements would boost their motivation.
Other incentives to take a job included pensions, at just over 25 per cent, and healthcare (20 per cent), which echoes the advice of Ms Bruce.
