According to the report entitled Talent Tightrope: Managing the Workplace through the Downturn, almost 3,000 employees in Australia and New Zealand were interviewed, finding that most employers are relatively ignorant of stress levels in the workplace.
It understood that while only 26 per cent of employers believe morale has fallen, 44 per cent of employees believe the same, showing that communication may have broken down and that team building conferences may be needed.
Scott Stacey, general manager of Hudson Victoria, told Smart Company that above everything else, motivation and morale should be at the top of the agenda.
He explained: "We're in a period where the vast majority of organisations have implemented some sort of pay freeze or even pay reduction and I think companies should look at other ways they can recognise their people if they can't do it through salary reviews.
"Perhaps some sort of incentive program."
Earlier this week, president of PointClickCare.com Mike Wessinger told the Montreal Gazette that success in an organisation is down to employee loyalty, adding that staff retention is top priority in the recession.
