Employers 'cannot decide between motivating staff and cutting costs'

Date: 07/05/2009

An annual survey by a leading UK employment news provider has found that employers are unable to choose between cutting costs and motivating staff during the recession.

According to the Employee Benefits Research 2009 study, 43 per cent of employers are intending to look into reward and recognition or incentive schemes, or simply carry on with the ones they have already implemented.

However, 29 per cent of respondents admitted they were planning on cutbacks such as pay freezes and the holding back of bonuses relating to performance.

Despite this, employers seem to be well aware of the offers they give to people in the UK, with two of the top issues now facing managers being the cost-effectiveness of any perks, as well as their perceived value by employees.

This underlines that many bosses may agree with Bloomberg, the financial giant which said last week that rewards are central to a productive and happy workforce and must never be done away with.
