Employee motivation will benefit from flexible working

Date: 24/08/2010

Increased workplace flexibility and a change in business philosophy could help to boost employee motivation in the future.

According to employment and technology expert Kristine Harper, everyone wants to be successful at their jobs, but measures for success are destined to change with the advance of new technologies and changing workplaces practices.

Speaking to Reuters, Harper, who works for Texas technology firm Neon Enterprise Software, said: "If I were a manager in the future, I would focus on increasing motivation and community in the workplace."

"I would try to emphasise the importance of employee get-togethers outside of [work] to promote a stronger sense of community and friendship."

She added that a strong sense of community brings with it an increased sense of employee motivation.

Harper also suggested that a good job will provide regular challenges for employees, keeping then interested and engaged.

According to American Express, introducing an effective reward and recognition programme can boost employee motivation and morale.
