However, according to employment expert Barbara Bowes, in the current economic climate, job security is hugely influential on job satisfaction and resultant motivation.
Writing for the Winnipeg Free Press, Bowes noted that the second most important driver of high employee motivation is benefits - including programmes such as sales incentive schemes.
She added: "Employee benefits are often the last thing employers think of; after all, they have typically had benefits in place for many years."
"But things change. Your employee demographics have changed and benefit offerings have greatly improved. It is probably time you undertook an assessment of how to update your plans," Bowes concluded.
Recently, stockmarketsreview.com claimed that firms which do not use sales incentives to motivate staff could negatively impact on their employees' morale.
The news provider suggested having inter-departmental competitions and issuing small trophies to valued members of staff.
