Instilling motivation in employees is a moral obligation as much as it is a performance-enhancing one, one writer has noted.
Speaking to the Times, Sathnam Sanghera said that while many companies invest in audacious bids to improve morale in the workplace, things ought to be kept simple and on a small scale if they are to be successful.
The expert explained that business needs people to be both happy and unhappy at certain times of the day, such is the very nature of the word 'work'.
He said that this can be used to the advantage of the employee and employer, yet this is no excuse to actively avoid boosting performance through team building events, as retaining employees is very important in the current climate.
Mr Sanghera is a published author and was shortlisted for the 2008 Costa Biography Award for his first work, The Boy With the Topknot: A Memoir of Love, Secrets and Lies in Wolverhampton.
