Employee motivation dented by downturn

Date: 27/07/2010

The recent economic downturn has severely dented employee motivation, it has been claimed.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the economic turmoil has highlighted the importance of employee motivation programs and ensuring that all workers are "united around a common aim".

Claire McCartney, CIPD's resourcing and talent planning adviser, said: "Organisations need to develop the people management skills of their line managers and acknowledge the importance of saying thank you for a job well done."

However, she added that the motivational relationship needs to work both ways, and employees, as well as managers, need to be involved in boosting morale.
Her comments come shortly after a survey by chrysaliscourses.co.uk, which showed that one third of staff feel "completely unappreciated" in their jobs, while a similar number say their jobs are not challenging enough.

According to Andy Philpott, managing director at Edenred, leadership and motivation can be improved if companies avoided a mass-marketing approach when sending out internal communications.
