Employee motivation 'galvanised by recognition programmes'

Date: 02/01/2009

The New Year will provide employers with a fresh start should they implement an employee recognition programme at their workplace, according to a staffing specialist.

Bonnie Burke told the Delmarva Media Group that bosses must ask themselves exactly how they are motivating employees and showing their appreciation for the skills and services they provide, as improving incentives results in a stronger and more vibrant business.

She said: "It's a great way to show your current staff, potential or new staff, and the community that you, the employer, the organisation, value your team. It reinforces the positive outcomes that your staff creates for your business."

Ms Burke added that little things such as employee of the month - where plaques are made visible to all co-workers after somebody excels in their department - can also bring about positive motivation for those who win and those who want to succeed.

However, Susan M Heathfield of About.com emphasises that this tactic can be misused, with the expert asserting that a company must make it wholly relevant and not a popularity contest, otherwise it may become farcical.ADNFCR-2060-ID-18954212-ADNFCR
