Employee motivation: Workers start off happy and get grumpier during the day according to Twitter study

Date: 03/10/2011

Workers wake up happy, but employee motivation fades throughout the day, according to a two-year study of Twitter messages.

More than 509 million tweets were studied from 2.4 million users around the world, which found that time of day, day of the week and length of day because of the time of year all had an impact on people's moods.

After the decline throughout the day the initial optimism is only regained after six o'clock when the stresses of work are forgotten.

Employers who are aware of the findings could use the research to understand how better to boost the employee motivation of their staff at different times of the day.

Twitter is a worldwide microblogging site, which provides instant updates to its subscribers from friends, celebrities and experts.

Michael Macy, co-author of the study, said: "Twitter offers an unprecedented opportunity for social and behavioural scientists to study social behaviour and interaction in real time with high temporal granularity."
