Employee motivation: The gender pay gap will never disappear completely, says expert

Date: 08/08/2011

The gender pay gap may have been reduced but it will never be gone completely, an expert has said, which is bad news for employee motivation.

Research from the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealed last week that pay and benefits are the top priority for people thinking about changing jobs, valued above job satisfaction – so we can see how important a pay packet is to staff morale.

But Shilpa Wymer, managing director at Holborn Training Ltd, pointed out that women will struggle to reach the top positions, and therefore earn more money, because of children.

"If you do want to get some of the higher positions then I think you have to make the decisions about whether you are willing to either not see your children, because you've got a nanny the whole time, or you decide that this is something you don't want and you do want to see your children," she said.

"[Women] have to take a step back and I think that's where the salary difference occurs."
