Prevention is better than the cure in terms of preventing staff from becoming stressed out and demotivated, it has been claimed.
According to Kevin Friery, clinical director at Right Corecare, to boost employee motivation, businesses need to equip their staff with the skills they need to cope in the workplace.
"Stress prevention is far better and far more effective than curing it, because apart from anything else, when you cure somebody – if somebody has a stressful situation and you help them deal with it, you help them get through that situation – you're not necessarily preventing the next one," he said.
Mr Friery's comments come after research from the London School of Economics suggested that managers' appraisals should rate their effectiveness in helping employees achieve a good work-life balance.
It suggested that even if options such as flexible working are available to staff, they have a better impact on lowering stress and boosting morale if they are seen to be endorsed by managers.
