Employee motivation: Staff performance will be damaged without broadband connectivity, says expert

Date: 24/06/2011

Rural businesses could struggle to compete without broadband connectivity, which will dampen employee motivation, it has been claimed.

Dr Charles Trotman, head of rural business development for the Country Land and Business Association, pointed out that broadband is an essential feature and without it, staff performance could be damaged.

"In order to be able to compete and compete effectively you need the most up to date telecommunications possible - broadband clearly is that up to date telecommunications provision," Dr Trotman pointed out.

"Now, if you don't have broadband you are unlikely to be able to compete with major competitors in urban areas."

He continued on to say that with more and more government business being conducted online – such as completing forms – it means more work for someone without broadband as they will have to ask someone else to do this for them.

"So, it's a lot simpler [and] a lot more business-efficient to have up to date, affordable and effective broadband connectivity," he added.

Jeremy Hunt, culture minister, recently announced a funding scheme to help rural communities achieve high-speed broadband which guarantees speeds of at least 25 Mbps.
