Employee motivation: Staff looking for incentives and recognition schemes, says expert

Date: 18/05/2011

Staff are growing increasingly interested in incentives and recognition such as salary sacrifice schemes, an expert has pointed out.

According to Matt Duffy, partnerships manager at Lorica, pensions contributions, childcare vouchers and cycle to work schemes are the top staff incentives workers are willing to consider.

Mr Duffy added that this could have an impact on recruitment, as people are looking for benefits when considering applying for a position.

He pointed out that the media coverage of these schemes has raised awareness among staff.

"[The media coverage] has predominantly been around things like pensions, childcare vouchers and cycle to work schemes, which have got people thinking a lot more about the tax efficiencies that can be driven through the workplace," Mr Duffy said.

"Then when they are looking at alternative roles, either within their own company or externally, the wider benefits context actually has a much larger impact than previously, instead of just basic salary."

Mr Duffy's comments follow research by Standard Life which pointed out that just 17 per cent of people aged over 55 think they could live on £140 per week – leading more people to look for benefits and extras.
