Employee motivation: Staff incentives good enough for the House of Commons

Date: 25/10/2011

Staff at the House of Commons are to benefit from an incentives and recognition scheme, which should help to boost employee motivation.

The lower paid staff will be given discounts on certain products, especially catering facilities, in a move originally proposed by the parliamentary branch of Unite.

A price hike at food outlets within the House has disproportionally affected the staff on the lowest wages and led to many of them not being able to buy meals.

Many of the staff who work for MPs lost their bonuses under the recent review of MPs' expenses, which constituted a fraction of their annual salary lost for some.

MPs are given a budget in order to pay for their staff, which is usually enough to pay for three full time employees, but the actual rate of pay is up to the MP's discretion.

Max Freedman, chair of the branch, said: "We look forward to seeing the details of the scheme and working with the House authorities to make sure it is effective and a good deal for MPs' staff."
