A study into employee motivation has found that nine in ten workers would describe themselves as being engaged with their job.
The results were collated by ETS, which undertook the research and found that 30 per cent of respondents said they were highly engaged in the workplace, reports HR Magazine.
It flies in the face of the opinion of some that employee motivation is currently very low among the UK workforce.
The results were in fact particularly positive with 90 per cent of the 680,000 people surveyed saying they would go the extra mile at work, 81 per cent would recommended it as a great place to work and 85 per don't intend to leave in the coming year.
Hannah Stratford, head of business psychology at ETS, said: "It continues to be a tough time for businesses and employees so it is really positive that nine out of ten employees describe themselves as being engaged at work."
She went on to say that employee engagement is vital if the UK is to get back to a healthy economy, though she highlighted that such external issues as job security may impact on how responses to surveys are given.
The most important factor stated as helping employees to feel motivated and engaged was feeling that their work was valued.
In total 57 per cent of respondents said this was the most important point, with a quarter citing good working relations and a further 16 per cent saying pay and benefits matter more to them than anything else.
Stratford said: "The factors that drive employees to be engaged at work differ between companies.
"Where some companies go wrong is in investing in engagement surveys but failing to ask employees the right questions and not acting on the results."
Employee engagement is key to productivity and employers cannot afford to leave it to look after itself.
