Employee motivation: Long hours mean need for employee rewards

Date: 04/10/2011

The importance of employee motivation has been highlighted by the longer hours and bigger workloads UK employees are taking on since the economic downturn began.

Nearly a third of those surveyed for the Aviva Health of the Workplace report said they have had to work longer hours in the past year.

This is coupled with 41 per cent reporting they have too much work to do, which means the need to make a conscious effort to motivate staff is more important than ever.

There are a number of ways to boost employee motivation, but companies which manage to do it well find their employees are more efficient, take less sick leave and stay with the company for longer.

A recent study of the microblogging site Twitter found that employees wake up optimistic, but get increasingly gloomier throughout their working day, so bosses who can motivate staff will help to counteract that.
