Less than ten per cent of those working in the UK have flexible working written into their contracts despite it being a great way to boost employee motivation.
Research by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) found over a third would like to have an agreement meaning they could work from home.
Nearly half have been granted the right to request it but only as and when it was necessary for practical purposes.
Proposals have been put forward to enshrine the right to request flexible working in legislation, meaning all employees could ask for the option.
Diana Bruce, senior policy liaison at the CIPP, said: "When the changes to legislation do take place, it should be remembered that it will remain a right to request, as opposed to any kind of right to work flexibly."
Flexible working can mean employees work from home, adjust their hours to fit their needs or even partake in a job share so their workload is split between two people.
