Employee motivation: Help employees with serious illnesses return to work

Date: 16/06/2011

Boost employee motivation by helping staff back to work after absence, bosses have been urged.

A poll by Aviva UK Health has revealed the concerns of employers after a member of their staff has been absent – showing how important good leadership motivation is at the time.

Over 60 per cent of bosses said their primary concern was the health and wellbeing of the staff member with a serious condition, Employee Benefits reports.

While almost one-quarter said they were concerned about the impact on other staff workloads.

Around 15 per cent worry about the impact it will have on employee motivation, and 11 per cent are concerned with getting their staff back to work.

Dr Doug Wright, head of clinical development at Aviva UK Health, told the news provider: "When faced with a serious illness, helping staff to continue to lead as normal a life as possible makes a real difference to them.

"Our research highlights that while employers genuinely care about their employees, they often do not have the right HR policies, employee benefits and advice in place to help them back into the workplace."

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute recently said that an effective way to boost staff morale is through communication between management and workers. ADNFCR-2060-ID-800581712-ADNFCR
