Employee motivation: Give workers some space

Date: 25/08/2011

A great way to increase employee motivation is to give workers some social space where they can go and unwind, away from their computer screens and phones, in the lunch hour and breaks.

According to Matt Oakley, chairman of the British Council for Offices research committee, office behaviour has changed dramatically in recent years and more and more companies are favouring open plan offices which feature some social space.

"The concept of a break-out area 20 years ago was non-existent. We are seeing more delivery of technology in these formal and informal working areas. There are places where you can get Wi-Fi and screens you can access," he said.

Mr Oakley added that having workers in one big area rather than shut away in separate offices is a great way to boost team building, as it allows people to share ideas and get creative with one another.

Hermie Hogg, a health and wellbeing consultant, recently stated that sitting at a desk all day can be damaging to employee motivation.
