Employee motivation: Employee loyalty declining worldwide

Date: 01/11/2011

Employee loyalty to the company they work for is declining worldwide, according to Mercer’s What’s Working survey.

The need for employee motivation is highlighted after the research took into consideration 30,000 members of staff across 17 geographical areas.

In some areas the number of employees seriously contemplating leaving their current employment was ten percentage points higher than when a study was carried out before the recession.

Incentives and recognition for staff is an area where many employees feel their company has cut back since the economic downturn.

Many employees, especially the younger ones, showed a desire for a change in the benefits offered by the company they work for in order to better engage staff.

As finances are stretched across many areas, some staff said they would be more loyal is simple changes including a better work-life balance were offered.

Eddie Hodgart, partner at Mercer, said: “More and more organisations are asking their employees what type of benefits they want to receive going forward.”
