Employee motivation: Boost morale in the workplace with effective communication

Date: 01/06/2011

Businesses wanting to boost employee motivation should listen to their employees and make sure there is a good dialogue between staff and bosses, it has been claimed.

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), has advised businesses that listening to employees' ideas and requests can boost the atmosphere in the office, so it's an effective method of leadership motivation.

This advice follows research from the CMI's Economic Outlook Survey, which showed that 70 per cent of managers think morale in their workplace has decreased in the last six months.

One way to achieve good communication between staff and management could be through corporate conferences, where bosses can address all workers at once to deliver the company message and boost morale.

"The connectivity between the managers and the workforce, the communication, the constant reiteration of what's going on and how you can get [the staff] engaged and involved [can boost morale in the office]. It's really the clarity around that," said Ms Spellman.

"Not only are your employees the people who work for you, but they live in the communities and they can be passionate on your behalf - they could be promoting what you do."
