Employees will always bring their problems to work or take them home at the end of the day, highlighting a need to observe this dimension of the workforce, according to an expert.
Cathy Holloway Hill of the Examiner emphasised that tough economic conditions will only exacerbate this underlying issue, which needs a pro-active approach to answer issues.
She explained that particularly in the US, a coaching stance is being adopted, which is moving away from the traditional style and getting more of a personal touch involved.
Ms Holloway Hill continued: "A coaching style has been proven to be more effective because it encourages employee buy-in instead of creating the departmental rules and enforcing them.
"It's important to keep in mind that employees are a company's number one resource."
A couple of ways this may be achieved is through a scheme of incentives and recognition, while team building corporate events may bring a better team dynamic.
Ms Holloway Hill's comments follow those of Maureen Moriarty, who told the Puget Sound Business Journal that team building conferences must work if a business remains successful in the downturn.
