The use of the term "employee engagement" should not be discarded as a business buzzword but should be constantly considered by managers, it is stated.
Greg Harris, the president of market research company Quantum Workplace - a specialist in staff retention and loyalty - said management must provide good leadership and guidance as well as chances to develop an employee's skills.
He noted that focusing on motivating employees through this time must highlight their future with the company - something that is needed more than ever.
Mr Harris continued: "You need to quell any negative or fatalistic attitudes that might be present and educate the staff that this isn't something that's going to last forever, and that we need to be prepared for better times once the economy turns around."
Last week, Harvard Management Update said that a recognition programme in the workplace which is deployed to motivate employees must focus on individual accomplishments but also reward collaboration and team building.
