Workers are likely to be in increasing need of employee motivation due to growing uncertainty about their futures, a leading organisation has said.
John Hannett, General Secretary of Usdaw, has highlighted the fact that the current unemployment rate is a major concern for everybody.
He said that retention is a key area that businesses must focus on in the coming months, as this is likely to have more long-term benefits for companies.
"That kind of commitment will then pay back dividends when they feel they have been treated fairly by their employer in terms of retaining their job," he explained.
Mr Hannett added that this is because it is a particularly difficult time for those workers who are unsure of their futures and who believe that the full impact of the government's spending cuts is likely to fall on them in the future.
One practice employers could encourage in order to boost employee motivation is the number of workers taking a proper lunch break, as Peter Baker, chief executive of the Men's Health Forum, has claimed this can have a positive impact on workers' mental health.
