EICC announces expansion of conference venue facilities
Date: 10/12/2009
Unanimous approval has been granted by Edinburgh City Council to push ahead with plans to expand the facilities provided by the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC).
The organisation will see a contractor chosen within the next three months, with the £85 million plans aiming to double the earning potential of the location, which currently has a banqueting capacity of 850.
However, under the new initiative, larger team building conferences and live brand experiences can be hosted, with the projected capacity improving to 1,800 while a new hall with 2,000 sq m of space will also be created.
Work on the project will begin in June 2010 and will likely be completed by early 2013.
Chief executive of the council-owned EICC Hans Rissmann said of the plans: "Edinburgh is established as a favourite destination for global meetings and our new space will help us maintain that leading market position through attracting larger and more profitable events to the city."
Since it opened in 1995, the EICC has welcomed over 800,000 delegates through its doors following around 2,100 events, in turn creating £245 million for Edinburgh.
