Cumbrian conference facilities are 'on the up'

Date: 17/02/2009

Carlisle is having one of its major leisure centres extended to improve its facilities for hosting such things as corporate hospitality events, it has been reported.

The Sands Centre, which was originally planned to only have a sports hall and swimming pool added to it in the new redevelopment, will now include corporate facilities for team building and other company events after brokering a deal with the University of Cumbria, the Carlisle News & Star reported.

Speaking to the news provider, council leader Mike Mitchelson said the project was "exciting" and would reaffirm the city's position as the cultural capital of the region.

He continued: "This would make the Sands Centre a flagship facility befitting a regional capital. Having the main hall freed up for events means there is more capacity to take concerts, exhibitions and conferences, enhancing Carlisle's offer as a conference centre."

This month, it was also revealed that fellow northern city York has been doing more business for corporate clients hosting team building events, with a number of historic attractions and the central rail location attracting well over a million delegates each year.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19030523-ADNFCR
