The top manager of Canada's Halifax Regional Municipal organisation of councillors is calling on the general public to stop criticising city staff immediately, citing dangerously low morale among workers.
A report for the Chronicle Herald revealed that the man in question, Dan English, is mad at the backlash his staff are facing after budget cuts due to a chronic shortage of funds.
"I deserve better, my team deserves better and this organization deserves better and I expect better," he said. "Employee morale and engagement is critical to the success of our organisation and we all have a role to play."
The multi-million pound budget shortfall has resulted in people looking at ways to bail out the city to save money and boost revenues, perhaps underlining the need for team building conferences among staff to pull together.
Recently, Sheila Payne, health management consultant at intermediary ADVO Group, told Health Insurance and Protection magazine that employers must recognise the need to communicate with staff consistently, particularly during difficult times, to avoid low employee morale.
