Could female bosses boost employee motivation?

Date: 22/10/2010

Workers in the UK prefer female bosses to a male ones, according to new research by a human resources specialist.

According to Reabur, 38 per cent of respondents said they believe that women make better managers than men.

Just 33 per cent claimed that gender was irrelevant to leadership and motivation, while 29 per cent claimed that men were better in charge.

The study polled 1,182 people across the UK, all of whom had had both male and female bosses during their careers.

Of the 38 per cent of those that preferred female business leaders, 59 per cent claimed it was because they were better able to listen to their employees needs, while 26 per cent said it was because they were more assertive than their male counterparts.

However, Georgina Read, co-founder of Reabur, said : "I don't think gender plays a role at all in whether a person has the ability to be in a management position."

The Chartered Management Institute recently called the good leadership and motivation key to Britain's economic recovery.
