Could corporate team building activities over a beer work?

Date: 25/06/2010

When the World Cup kicked off and England's performance was distinctly below average - some even said appalling - it was clear from the outset that some form of team building was vital.

And following the team's comparatively sparkling performance against Slovenia, it was hardly surprising when team manager Fabio Capello put the boost in performance down to simple team building activities.

The England squad simply got together for a beer ahead of the match, the Italian manager said.

Dr Jamie Barker, senior lecturer on sport and exercise psychology at Staffordshire University, supports Capello's team building activities tactic.

He told the BBC: "National teams are very different from clubs. You're bringing people together from different clubs with different cultures and the emphasis is to get them all singing from the same hymn sheet.

"[Team building activities] are really about getting people up to speed with their roles."
