Corporate event management: Organisers warned of pressure on suppliers this summer

Corporate event organisers are being warned that suppliers are likely to be put under a lot of pressure this summer as the country plays host to a number of large scale events.

The biggest of these is the Olympic Games and the Events Industry Forum has sent out a letter suggesting those in corporate event management ensure they are prepared for any problems which may arise, reports Event magazine.

Jim Winship, secretary of the forum, said: "We are particularly concerned that this could result in inexperienced suppliers entering the market with the result that something goes badly wrong and the reputation of the industry as a whole becomes tarnished."

Being well prepared and making sure all arrangements are made well in advance of the Olympics is one way that such potential problems can be minimised, the organisation suggested.

Another precaution can be to check that event suppliers are registered with a trade body and have been for a substantial amount of time as this helps to prove they have sufficient experience.

With the pressures, the Olympic Games are expected to bring added opportunities to the UK and its businesses.

The forum hopes that the letter will help all events to go smoothly this summer and as much benefit to be obtained from it as possible and a positive legacy to remain.

Mr Winship said in the letter: "We understand from our members that a large number of the events being planned have yet to be formalised and, in many cases, little has been done to secure the equipment and support needed for them to happen."

As well as the Olympics, this year will see celebrations held for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Charles Dickens' bicentenary and the World Shakespeare Festival.
