A new conference centre will be completed in County Durham by the end of the year, it has been announced.
The Xcel Conference Centre will be built in the Aycliffe Business Park in the market town of Newton Aycliffe and will be open to events organisers by the end of December, the Northern Echo has reported.
Phil Wilson, the MP for Sedgefield, visited the site this month and was particularly pleased at the prospect of 100 new jobs within the region, which will maintain the 1,200-seater auditorium and exhibition hall - making it the largest of its kind between Newcastle and Harrogate.
He said: "This is exactly what is needed for the area and a fantastic opportunity for Newton Aycliffe."
Centre manager Kerina Clark added: "Our aim is to provide the best conference facilities in the north-east and, in doing so, be able to invest back into the local communities."
Harrogate's International Centre, on the other hand, currently hosts a number of big corporate events including the Conservative Party conference, the UK Wedding Shows and the UK Dementia Congress 2009.
