Companies need to 'ensure employees are engaged'
Date: 04/08/2010
UK firms need to ensure they boost employee motivation by making staff members feel engaged.
According to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), businesses need to re-examine the level at which they liaise with their staff.
Commenting on recent research from PricewaterhouseCoopers, which showed that UK firms were being outperformed by their US counterparts when came to return-on-investment in people, Mike Petrook, head of public affairs at the CMI, said: "In terms of human capital management, we need to look closer at how we are engaging with our staff."
He added: "One of the big issues is - are they getting what they want from their place of work? Just as much as - is the workplace getting what they want from the employee?"
Petrook claimed that employee engagement levels are at a low ebb - suggesting that employers may need to introduce alternative reward and recognition programs to keep staff on board.
A recent report issued by Lane4 claimed that motivation among managers was relatively high despite the recent recession.
