The need for a reward and recognition scheme is a matter of basic business sense, with one expert outlining three key necessities for an effective performance programme in the workplace.
Employee incentives expert Donna Sizemore told HR Zone that it was simply a business requirement for sustained growth.
She said: "It's a fact of life: every year costs rise, employees want raises, shareholders demand greater returns. This means the company must make more money every year. Thus, carrots should be dangled."
The specialist firstly stated that management should help employees understand the company goals and what is in it for them should they assist it in succeeding.
Secondly, Ms Sizemore emphasised the rewarding of performance which enhances corporate values, using informal prizes and special achievement status to keep people looking for surprise responses to their hard work.
Finally, she emphasised that the culture of recognition to ensure that workers are valued for their contributions is the best way a company can go about motivating employees, with satisfied staff resulting in satisfied customers.
These comments were echoed by Dr Shirley Janner of Manchester Metropolitan Business School, who said people need motivation in the current economic climate to retain them and push the business upwards in a climate characterised by downward trends.
